 Preliminary Exercise: Photography

In preparation of our final magazine task, we are doing a preliminary exercise in which we're going to design a high-school-esq magazine cover on Photoshop. However, before we design the cover we need a good picture with sufficient headroom which we will later use as the cover picture of the magazine cover. I asked my senior and friend, Emil, to be the model for the cover picture since she is equal parts bookish and cool, fitting the notion of high school people have in their minds. 
















I have decided to use the third picture in my magazine cover since I  enjoy the composition of the picture and her staring into the camera will make the magazine look more immersive. The contrast of nature with symbols of man such as the books creates an interesting image of the balance teenagers try to achieve in their lives despite the ever rising expectations to succeed they struggle with.

Shoot Analysis (Rejected Pictures) There are good and bad pictures in every photo shoot. What's important is filtering out the inappropriate images and out takes so we're left with the good pictures we know we would like to use in our magazine. These are pictures I've decided to exclude. This would have been a good option for the magazine cover except the shadows fell really awkwardly on Emil's (the model) figure, focused more on her throat than her face and even so in the middle of the throat making the light source look confusing. This image is too dark and will probably turn darker with a very sharp contrast after it is gray-scaled. The lack of rim light also makes it confusing as to where the shadows end and the model begins and not in the way I visualised it. Bad shots happen to good people.
