Lighting and Equipment

Magazine Cover Photo Shoot:

This photo shoot was indoors, in the chosen location, the auditorium of LGS 1A1. I utilised the lights already present in the auditorium as key light including it's over hanging spotlights which provided me with the warm light I needed. To create the shadows I obstructed the pathway of light with a notebook manually. No rim light was used and for some shoots the door to the auditorium was opened to let in a slight side light which I used as fill light.

Secondary Images Photo shoot:

This photo shoot was outdoors. For these my one and only source of light was sunlight itself. I did, however, use a CD to add light flares to some of the pictures.

Equipment

For both these photo shoots I used a Canon 100D camera. Despite having three different lens:1:1.8 STM EF Lens 50 mm, 18-55mm EFS and 75-300, I ended up mostly using the 18-55mm EFS.

Camera Shots and Angles:

For my magazine cover, I mostly took mid long shots with a few mid shots mixed in. For secondary images and anchoring image I took a range of shots including, mid shots, mid long shot, mid close up shots, full shots and even over the shoulder shots. Different angles which were used include eye level view, high level angle and low level angle.

Experience

I arrived at the location at 8:00 am and got straight to setting up the auditorium for the photo shoot. I had already acquired permission to use the auditorium 8:30-9:30 by the school admin. I switched on and adjusted the brightness of the spotlights and made arrangements for the mic to be set up. And the speakers...a little music to set the mood.

The model arrived at 8:30 with here ukulele as requested and we got to work, taking the pictures for the cover first and then any secondary images I wanted to take indoors, including where I had Emil actually sing to capture some candid mid performance pictures. We wrapped this up by 9:15

After a 30 mins break where we enjoyed a nice chat and juice boxes, we headed outside to lane connected to the courtyard to take secondary pictures. This photo shoot was more laid back and relaxed since the apprehension of taking the perfect picture for the cover was now gone. We had fun and I managed to take an abundance of good pictures in different poses. We were finished by 10:15.

Some of my favorite blooper images:

Strengths

  • Thanks to my good management and planning (pre-planned shots and location recce) as well as Emil's incredible make up skills (she did her make up herself) we saved a lot of time.
  • Knowing the model as a close friend made it really easy to work with her especially in terms of cooperativeness.
  • I was using equipment I had been using for the entire year, which meant I had been quite comfortable and had no problems.
  • Since the location was my own school, I wasn't stressed about getting things done on time (despite being ahead of schedule) or needing last minute resources like a chair for my photo shoot.
  • Since all the lights were already available on location, I didn't have to carry any lighting equipment and spend copious amounts of time setting it up and needing people to carry reflectors.

Weaknesses

  • In between the lights went out but it was quickly dealt with by turning on secondary power resources such as a UPS.
  • I had to make the shadows fall on the model manually so I had to call a friend to do so which was a fault in my planning.

"The Beginning is Always Today" Forlorn, a girl stares out the window, unseeing. This world bores her. So she makes a new one. And then another. And another. And another. And another. Refined Content Page Despite being done with the content page, I decided it wouldn't hurt to look over it and see what can be done to spazz things up a bit. Once I looked it over I decided that despite the colourful pictures it looked a little bland so I made a few improvements. I thought it would be better to introduce a little more uniformity and so I made the first three columns equal in size. Naturally, the next step was to adjust all the elements on the content page accordingly. I did this with the help of the transformation tool (Ctrl T). I felt my content page could be improved with a splash of colour so I used the rectangle tool to make a long red rectangle in accordance with the magazine's colour scheme, the size of the right most column. I dragged this layer under all the others. I removed the ellipses from the heading of the content page and turned all the textual elements white so they would stand out against the red background. Key Media Concepts "What we learn with pleasure, we never forget." Today's class was an exciting mix of future prospects and facts. We learned about key media concepts through a very interesting mnemonic 'MIGRAIN', which will perhaps later act as a Freudian slip!  What are key media concepts you may ask. They're the basic components used by media creators to communicate to their audience and perfectly project their thoughts within their art or more technically known as their media product.  M   edia forms and language I     nstitutions G  enre R   epresentation A  udience I   deaology N  arrative Media forms and language, to put it simply, are the way of doing things when it comes to the makings of an media product, print or otherwise.
