Pictures for my Content Page Since I decided I wanted my content page to be very picture oriented, I had to go take said pictures. I recruited a few friends, gathered a few make up products and props and then I got to work. I wanted a picture for each feature I had. According to my (very) rough planning the content page would look like this: The boxes are spaces for pictures belonging to the featured articles which means I need 7-8 pictures for my content page. Stand. Rise. Regroup. Naturally I started off by choosing an image for my cover story. I had already shortlisted a few images from my photo shoot. Out of these I decided to use: I decided to use this eye level mid close up because it did a good job of showcasing her expressions. Her being in focus while the background was blurred showing her significance. It also nicely captures her style and attitude. Jessy Rayburn I asked my friend Asphah to model for me for this particular feature. She possess q
Final Magazine Task After months of planning and preliminary tasks, we finally got to design our very own magazine cover for the genre of our choosing which in my case was an indie music magazine. I started off by opening a new file in Photoshop with the pre chosen dimensions for my magazine, a conventional 8.4 x 10/9 inches and a sustainable 150 pixels per inch resolution.  After that I opened the image I had finalised for my magazine cover, transforming it with the transformation tool through the shortcut Ctrl T, to fit the cover appropriately, keeping the positioning of the masthead and other elements such as the rainbow in mind. The image was a mid long shot just as I had planned but as I was adjusting it, I realised the picture had more impact a little zoomed in since it made the model's expression for prominent.   The next step was the placement of the masthead. 'Niagra Engraved' was the font I had chosen in my planning and it worked
Choosing the Cover Photo After filtering the images I want to use in my magazine, I'm left with two very strong contenders for my magazine cover and one image which isn't as aesthetically pleasing but might fair well after being gray-scaled. To help visualise how the elements of my magazine (especially the cover lines) will look paired with said images I've decided to contrast the pictures with the diagrams I made in my mock ups and sketches post. I did this with the help of Photoshop by overlaying both layers and decreasing the opacity of the pictures so the elements and their localisation can be seen. Out of these three, I felt the first option was the best fit for my vision, due to not only the look it captured of the model but also how elements such as the cover lines were not being disrupted by the subject of the picture. However, the reflected rainbow will now be reflected upwards to fill in the gap and for prominence.
Shoot Analysis (Selected Pictures) I'm now left with good pictures I would be comfortable using for my magazine. However, I have to be selective and pick the ones which would best match the themes and colour palette of my magazine.  Here are the ones I've considered using. This picture has a great figure to shadow ratio as I wanted and is a mid long shot according to my planning. I feel this amongst other shots may be able to portray the narrative I'm trying to tell.  I really like this picture. Appropriate codes such as the mic is present. The model looks serious and striking and the red flare only works to increases the dramaticness of the picture. I might use this as a secondary image if it blends well with the theme.  I really liked the lighting and framing of this picture. I plan to use it as my anchoring image. It will meld in perfectly with the black background of the double spread.  I'm considering using this picture in my p
Shoot Analysis (Rejected Pictures) There are good and bad pictures in every photo shoot. What's important is filtering out the inappropriate images and out takes so we're left with the good pictures we know we would like to use in our magazine. These are pictures I've decided to exclude. This would have been a good option for the magazine cover except the shadows fell really awkwardly on Emil's (the model) figure, focused more on her throat than her face and even so in the middle of the throat making the light source look confusing. This image is too dark and will probably turn darker with a very sharp contrast after it is gray-scaled. The lack of rim light also makes it confusing as to where the shadows end and the model begins and not in the way I visualised it. Bad shots happen to good people. A case of blinking at an unfortunate time. It was only after the shot had been clicked when I realised the 'Super Biscuits' wrapper on
Production Log Lighting and Equipment Magazine Cover Photo Shoot: This photo shoot was indoors, in the chosen location, the auditorium of LGS 1A1. I utilised the lights already present in the auditorium as key light including it's over hanging spotlights which provided me with the warm light I needed. To create the shadows I obstructed the pathway of light with a notebook manually. No rim light was used and for some shoots the door to the auditorium was opened to let in a slight side light which I used as fill light. Secondary Images Photo shoot: This photo shoot was outdoors. For these my one and only source of light was sunlight itself. I did, however, use a CD to add light flares to some of the pictures. Equipment For both these photo shoots I used a Canon 100D camera. Despite having three different lens:1:1.8 STM EF Lens 50 mm, 18-55mm EFS and 75-300, I ended up mostly using the 18-55mm EFS. Camera Shots and Angles: For my magazine cover, I mostly
