Indie Music

More often than not when people are asked to describe indie artist, they describe a band of what can be best thought of as 'rebels' strumming a few tunes on their guitars only to go backstage and exclaim, "Duuude. That was awesome."

Well their half right and half wrong. Indie artists are in fact rebels. The word Indie (slang for independent) itself originated in England in the wake of punk-rock in the late 1970's and the do-it-yourself ethos. This means that most is not all artists were using their musical platform, no matter how small, to perpetuate their socio-political views.

Now you may be thinking, 'Hey I liked American Idiot, I guess I like Indie.' This is where the most distinct difference lies. Greenday, from the beginning has been in contracts with major record labels such as but not limited to Reprise Records (founded by Frank Sinatra).  A better example would be 'Kids on the Street' by initial indie artists 'All-American Rejects'. However, some artists who have signed with major records can also be considered indie if their views and sentiments are being accurately projected to their audience without external influences such as 'Muse'.

Indie labels give their artists more freedom on the sort of music they make inclusive of songwriting, production and post-production. This helps encapsulate the true spirit of what the artists want to say.

This allure is exactly what attracts artists like LP. After having multiple favourite tracks dropped and the remaining altered beyond recognition in her album, Forever for Now, she took a more indie rock/pop approach, penning songs of such genius that she could not be denied. Songs such as 'Lost on You' and 'Muddy Waters' in her latest album 'Death Valley'.

Indie awards artists of portraying their rawest emotions in the form of their music. Despite a lot of indie music resembling one another due to the drawing of inspiration, Indie music is free from the constraints of musical genres, letting artists dabble in multiple genres.

Refined Content Page Despite being done with the content page, I decided it wouldn't hurt to look over it and see what can be done to spazz things up a bit. Once I looked it over I decided that despite the colourful pictures it looked a little bland so I made a few improvements. I thought it would be better to introduce a little more uniformity and so I made the first three columns equal in size. Naturally, the next step was to adjust all the elements on the content page accordingly. I did this with the help of the transformation tool (Ctrl T). I felt my content page could be improved with a splash of colour so I used the rectangle tool to make a long red rectangle in accordance with the magazine's colour scheme, the size of the right most column. I dragged this layer under all the others. I removed the ellipses from the heading of the content page and turned all the textual elements white so they would stand out against the red background. Fin...
Preliminary Exercise: Photography In preparation of our final magazine task, we are doing a preliminary exercise in which we're going to design a high-school-esq magazine cover on Photoshop. However, before we design the cover we need a good picture with sufficient headroom which we will later use as the cover picture of the magazine cover. I asked my senior and friend, Emil, to be the model for the cover picture since she is equal parts bookish and cool, fitting the notion of high school people have in their minds.  I have decided to use the third picture in my magazine cover since I  enjoy the composition of the picture and her staring into the camera will make the magazine look more immersive. The contrast of nature with symbols of man such as the books creates an interesting image of the balance teenagers try to achieve in their lives despite the ever rising expectations to succeed they struggle with.   (Me photographing Emil...
"The Beginning is Always Today" Forlorn, a girl stares out the window, unseeing. This world bores her. So she makes a new one. And then another. And another. And another. And another. That girl is me. Today marks the birth and creation of my blog which's purpose is to keep a record of the progress I've made on my foundation portfolio. Being seventeen and deeply intoxicated with the art of story telling and sharing said stories with the masses through a medium which brings us all together, taking Media Studies in my A levels was a natural choice.  Along with Psychology, Literature in English and History, it evolves my understanding of people and aids me in my aspiration of telling an exciting tale; mine. I look forward to telling you more about my project as it progresses and myself.  Keep reading!
